Picture this. Heather is clearing dinner plates when her son asks for his iPad. She had meant to read a Bible story with him tonight. There is homework to check, a younger child needs a bath, and the Bible is still on the shelf. She can already hear the answer she gave herself yesterday: tomorrow.

The lesson is still waiting to be chosen

Heather wants to open the Bible with her children. At the end of this day, choosing a passage, checking its meaning and thinking of a question all have to happen before she can even begin. Her son is standing beside the table, waiting for an answer about the iPad.

There is a smaller decision she could make earlier in the week: choose one complete lesson and a time to try it. She could preview the material while the house is quiet, then leave the next step ready for the afternoon.

A prepared story gives him somewhere to begin

In this version of the evening, Heather has already previewed an illustrated lesson in First Followers. She has chosen the edition and checked what her son will be asked to do. He opens that lesson while she stays nearby to help with words or questions.

He reads the story and works through its activities. A drawing asks him to show a moment from the passage. He chooses a detail Heather might not have thought to ask about.

The conversation starts with his response

Later, Heather opens his submitted response on her phone. She sits beside him and asks, “Tell me about this part.” He points to the drawing and begins explaining which moment he chose.

The lesson has given them a shared reference. Heather can ask what happened before that moment, or look back at an answer with him. A conversation has a place to begin, even on an evening that still includes dishes and bath time.

Find the version that fits your household

You could try this with a printed reading and question, a children's Bible or a prepared app lesson. Preview the material and choose how much help your child needs. If an evening has no room, choose another point in the week.

First Followers brings illustrated Bible lessons, child responses and parent reports together on iPhone and iPad. A family subscription is required. Screen-time rewards are optional; the lesson and the conversation can have their own place in the day.
